As an aside, there were no white people in Aladdin because they weren’t aiming for historical accuracy.
Because Tangled is going for historical accuracy too?? No, I agree with both of these arguments. Disney is lacking in POC certainly, but Rapunzel is (correct me if I’m wrong) originally a German faerie tale. Or French. I forget which, but still. It’s portrayed “historically” as white because white people wrote it about white people. Snow White is the same, a classic beautifully drawn and told story about pretty white people (even the queen is white, which goes against the usual stereotype that non-white people play bad guys in a lot of old films.) The dwarves are white too, but apparently they don’t get heat because they’re fantasy made creatures.O
Or should we get uppity about them being white when they’re not human? Or should we bring up a terrible argument about how they portray signs of cocaine addiction and that puts a bad shadow on little people??
See, that sounds ridiculous, right? I think so. You can debate and debate on Disney not portraying POC in films (except, you know, in AWESOME ONES like Mulan and Lilo and Stitch and Aladdin (which is set in a fictional place with an obscure ethnicity.) And The Princess and the Frog too, as subpar as it is compared to most other Disney films. I will give you that, they wanted a token black princess. I still enjoy it for what it is, though. Facilier is one of my all time favorite baddies because voodoo is awesome. Or doesn’t he count because he’s a POC who’s a badguy? Let’s go with Tia Dalma in Pirates of the Carribean. Wait, she’s a goddess really, so she couldn’t count as someone of color because she’s not real. Oh wait, none of these people are real!!
Disney’s done worse in the past with racial stereotypes and I am in no way making an excuse for them but it was a production of the time. The Chinese cat in Aristocats, produced during the Vietnam War. The Crows in Dumbo, produced long before the Civil Rights movement in the 60s. Etc. Modern day stereotyping is usually avoided, but I remember seeing Asian cats portrayed as recent as Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers in an extremely racist and stereotypical way and that was what, ten years ago? They’re doing better, but they’re not perfect.
Okay now I’m rambling but. These are my thoughts. They probably make no sense though. Like I said, I agree with both of you but this is always really interesting to me.
Can you tell me where in German history the hyper-intelligent chameleons and the horses who think they are RoboCop are? Because I’m pretty sure the creators of the movie didn’t have a problem with adding things that weren’t in the original story and couldn’t possibly have existed in a historical timeframe, which makes the idea that the presence of a few people whose ancestors weren’t from the white part of
Wacky-Made-Up-Fantasy-Kingdom-WorldTotally Real Germany was something rejected for reasons of verisimilitude kind of… suspect.EXCUSE YOU
HORSES AND CHAMELEONS WERE DEFINITELY AS INTELLIGENT AS HUMANS WAY BACK IN YE OLDE GERMANIE
SO WERE MAGICAL FLOWERS THAT TURNED HAIR COLORSHDU NOT RECOGNIZE THE HISTORICAL ACCURACY!!!
idk, I think that horse in Tangled is smarter than all the white people talking in this debate today
my bold
also if we are going in for ~history~… er, for one thing, many different ethnic groups exist and have existed in Germany.
Not to mention, large river running through towns and major city in ‘Tangled’ = potential for trade and travel = more diverse populations flowing in and out of the place. Perfectly possible.
I mean, if you deny that there were any brown or black people in northern Europe before the 20th century, then you’re really not considering how people - native and foreign - got themselves and various goods in and out of the country. Also missionairies. And colonialism.
It’s not like brown people suddenly broke an invisible barrier around their brown countries and starting getting in your face like 50 years ago or something….
Villain! Be sure thou prove my completely unfounded assumptions false! Be sure of it; give me the ocular proof that there were Black people in Europe in the 1600’s! Or, by the worth of mine eternally racist soul, thou hadst better been born a dog than answer my wak’d wrath!
Seriously though Pear, you’re acting like, I dunno, the most famous English language writer of all time wrote one of his most acclaimed plays about a Black guy in Venice in 1603 or something.
UMMM
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT [REDACTED]???? WHY ARE YOU CHATTING SHIT TO ME IN MIDDLE ENGLISH, DON’T YOU DARE ‘YE OLDE’ ME.
ALSO, MARLOWE DIDN’T WRITE ‘HAMLET’!!!!
