TRIGGER WARNING: Child rape
Please do not click “More” if you do not want to see Hugo Schwyzer’s reaction to Joe Paterno’s death.
And … you don’t. Not really.
It’s ridiculously paternalistic to try to remind us (who is this douche’s audience? Like seriously?) that monsters are people. Who does he think forgets that? Who is he to tell me what to remember about a shithead who I only learned about because he failed to protect children on his beloved campus? What is the point? UGH.
I think this is one of the biggest “missing the point” issues I see around. Its most problematic coming from those supposedly interested in fighting oppression, but gets pretty popular play amongst people that are not necessarily doing social justice on purpose. The idea that only monsters do things that hurt others.
Its people that hurt others. People that made the choice to hurt other people. No, they aren’t monsters, and in the right contexts, they will be rewarded by other people that are also not monsters. Thats the whole fucking point in talking about privilege. To point out how everyday people can do awful things to other people without thinking about it.
