In linguistics, a phatic expression is one whose only function is to perform a social task, as opposed to conveying information.

Speaker one: “What’s up?”
Speaker two: “Hey, man, how’s it going?”

And each just walks on.

These exchanges routinely make me uncomfortable as hell. If we aren’t exchanging information, then why are we talking?
